The Best Day of My Life

17 Feb

The best day of my life was on January 11th. It was the concert of my favorite DJ. It ws at Estadio del Ejercito and I went with my best friends. It was so much fun and I enjoyed every single second I saw him. It was one of my happiest experiences ever. He played for three hours and all of my favorite songs were included on his music set. Definetely, I would do everything to go back to that day. So far, it has been the best day of my life. I think it’s also my best weekend because the day before I went to another concert and it was so much fun too.

How The Environment Affects Me

17 Feb

I think your environment takes an important role on your attitude. If there’s someone angry near you, you tend to follow their attitude and you change yours. Not only people near you can change your mood, also the news or situations going on in the country or in areas near you, can define how are you going to behave. The type of music you listen to, the places where you are, the way in which you are dressed, can influence on how your day is going to be.  The food you eat or the people that are near you are such a strong influence on you. For example, if you are near lazy people, you tend to follow their steps, if you are near hardworking people, they would be an influence to you and you’ll follow their steps, Either good or bad, the influence of the environment near you is really strong.

INHERITED DISEASES

3 Oct

I don’t have a disease that I can say it was inherited. But my brother and sister do have a disease.  It is called Stargatz. It’s a disease that doesn’t allow you to see things by the center of the object. You need to find ways to see only the background of the objects. It was inherited by my mom’s side and it consists that the chromosomes of her mother had the disease so it was transferred not to my mom but to my brother and sister. When my brother and sister went to the hospital to get checked, they were told that before they have kids, they need to check themselves to see if the disease would be transferred.

I’m really surprised because when my brother got checked, the doctor told him that Stargatz patients are 1 in a million so its awkward that in such a small country they were found with the disease.

DNA in CSI

25 Sep

DNA has been a helpful tool to solve crimes. People who use DNA as a clue to solve crimes, trust a 100% in the results. In 1984 was the first time scientists could use DNA to differentiate people. DNA uses a small part of a person to know all the genetic information about that person.

Thanks to the DNA, a man who was pointed guilty to murder 2 girls, showed up that he was innocent thanks to the DNA tests.

The DNA tests are not used only with humans; it’s also used in plants. Scientists used the DNA of a tree to know the true about a HIV infection.

In 1990, law got a databank and thanks to the DNA results, the criminal was arrested.

The main advantage of DNA is that the results are efficient and accurate. But the DNA has also a disadvantage, DNA profiles could be eventually to certain illnesses and character traits and this information would be used by other organisations to the disadvantage of a person.

Sometimes contamination of the DNA may lead to errors in the results.

ETHICS IN SCIENCE

4 Sep

Franklin was an excellent scientist; she started at the age of 15. Her father was always opposing her decision in which career to choose because he wanted to be a social worker. She was the only part responsible in solving the DNA structure. She once showed a picture to Watson and immediately, he took the idea of her and make the discover public.

When all news and media saw what Watson published, they gave all the credit to Watson and Crick and Franklin’s idea was only known as supporting details, even though she was the one who discovered it.

In 1962 James Watson and Francis Crick received the Nobel Prize in medicine because they determined the structure of DNA.  Although Rosalind Franklin was the one who discovered it, she was not honored at all. She was the only one who discovered it. When Watson and Crick saw what she was doing, they took her idea and took all the credits. Because it was in the 1960’s there was machismo so people only honored Watson and Crick and not Franklin.

I think that only because of her death she was not rewarded. What Crick and Watson did is not acceptable. In my opinion, they should be punished because they only said it was their idea and they knew it was Franklin’s idea. It’s not fair that they take all the credit if the one who did all the work was Franklin.

I can’t believe authorities let it happen and there was no punishment for them. Even though, they were rewarded with such a big price without knowing the truth and they took all the credit. The Nobel Prize says that only the people who live can get honored and rewarded but it was Franklin’s idea and not Watson nor Crick’s one.

Tornado In Guatemala

29 Aug

The weather in Guatemala tends to vary a lot. Specially in these months is when it changes. There was a really strong rain on August 26 and the rain mixed with wind created a mini tornado. It was not as strong as you see in the movies. But you could see how people were left without a place to live. It was an awful situation going on, it was really dangerous. Thanks to god it was not a tragedy! I hope that the high amount of mountains help the country to avoid the chances of having tornadoes. I think that the government should do something to help the families that were left without a roof.

PEE for cabbages

21 Aug

You may find this disgusting but actually it’s true. You may think pee ends up in wastes. Actually it doe but in Finland some scientists used pee to experiment something with their crops.

They tested cabbages in 3 different ways. One of them was with pee. The other was with fertilizers and the last one was with normal soils. The three things were tested under the same coditions and during the same time. The result is really amazing! The cabbages with pee resulted to grow faster and better than the other cabbages. So pee is not useless, for cabbages it can be used as a “natural soil” even though it’s a bit disgusting.

Endangered species

15 Aug

Have you heard of global warming? Well there are hundreds of animals threatened because of it. One of them are polar bears.

Polar bears are animals that travel to find their mate. Sometimes they travel to search for food. Often they hunt seals or other animals that live in the ice.

Because of global warming, the ice of the Antartic is melting. That means that polar bears are almost left with no place to live. The ice is their habitat and they are loosing it because of something it’s not their fault.

I think we should make something to prevent the melting of glaciers. That way we could save some polar bwars and avoid the fact for them to become an endangered species.
